B A C K G R O U N DFamily Ranking:
Corporate Executive (Kang Tao - Disowned by Family)
Parents:
'Anthony Shen' 罗安泰 - Deputy Head of Internal Corporate SecurityAnthony viewed Sammy's rejection of the rigid corporate life as a betrayal to his life's work, and when his only son chose personal freedom and moral independence over the power and influence his family could provide, the patriarch severed ties, considering Sammy a liability to his carefully curated reputation.
'Rebecca Shen' 岑美玲 - Senior R&D StrategistRebecca's disappointment turned to disdain when Sammy not only walked away from the privileges they offered but also aligned himself with those opposing corporate interests. In her eyes, his actions are a betrayal of the opportunities she worked tirelessly to provide.
Childhood Environment:
In a defended Corporate Zone in the Central City -
P E R S O N A L I T YPersonality:
Rebellious, Anti-Social & ViolentYears of stifled expression and corporate grooming created the perfect pressurized environment for pent up aggression. Now free from his overbearing parents, Sammy's callous honesty has earned him few friends, and even fewer confidants, but the begrudging respect among those who tolerate his foul mouthed behaviour.
Person You Value Most:
Lover - 'Evelyn Tao' 陶音
What Do You Value Most?
Honesty
How Do You Feel About Most People?
People are Untrustworthy. Don't Depend on AnyoneEveryone has an agenda. That's one of the few rare kernels of truth that still exist within Nighty City. Sam's relentless rebellion against a city built on obfuscation, espionage and treachery is a tireless, and futile endeavour - one he knows would be mocked by, and taken advantage of by everyone in Nighty City. 'Cus in Night City, you can always be sure that someone is always out for something: Money. Power. Love
Your Most Valued Possession
A photograph - His first day spent with Evelyn
Lover:
Love Affair with Problems- 'Evelyn Tao' 陶音The adopted daughter of Master Tao Zhen (陶真), her existence was kept a secret from Sammy until the two met by coincident. Although largely unaware of Sammy's violent career path, her adoptive family sees the relationship as one headed towards disaster. During one incident, Sammy was kidnapped by more zealous members of the Silent Lotus, who tried to intimidate him from continuing their relationship further. This failed, but after the fourth attempt, Sammy eventually offered his terms - the mercenary would gradually embrace their doctrine of non-violence and earn their acceptance in order to keep seeing Evelyn.
The two mostly spend their days around Chinatown, or driving around in Sam's Mizutani Shion. Despite their affections, nothing more intimate has transpired from their relationship, making it a rare, almost innocent and sincere loves to develop in Night City.
Friend:
Older Brother Relationship- 'Liam' 梁志涵'A former senior monk within the Order of the Silent Lotus (寂蓮派), Liam's beliefs became tested when his fellow monks became the targets of local gangs. His meeting with Sammy was the turning point for the monk, who renounced his pacifism to form the Lotus Guard - 蓮衛. A jovial giant, Liam's relationship with Sammy is a brotherly one, though the youngster often feels chaffed under his mentorship.
Enemy:
Childhood Friend- 'Jimmy' 金豪'One of Sammy's rare friends growing up in the Corpo District, their relationship managed to survive even after the errant youth left his parent's graces to survive as a street merc. Unfortunately, during one of Sammy's botched missions, a streetside firefight broke out which resulted in the death of Jimmy's fiance. Since then, Jimmy has sworn off of Sammy for good, and uses whatever influence he has as an executive manager in Kang Tao's security department to make Sammy's life a living hell.

S K I L L S & R O L ELifepath:
Nomad - Leader of the Lotus Guard - 蓮衛 Chinatown Gang
Skills:
Family (Special Skill) - A tight-knit group of allies or a "family" that provides resources, backup, and support.
Provocateur - Mixing a slew of Cantonese, Korean and the best of Night City's insults, Sammy's exceptionally well at picking fights with even a nun.
Intimidator - The little warlord commands a degree of fear and respect with his sharp wit and violent disposition. For those unaccustomed to physical violence, Sammy's way of walking and talking brings the message across - both his bark and bite are dangerous.
Corporate Education - Afforded the best education throughout his youth, Sammy's uncouth appearance hides a repertoire of knowledge that covers a broad range of subjects.
Martial Arts - Savate/Street Savate - Trained in martial arts as his one request to his parents during his teenage years, Sammy is a powerful close range combatant with a boxing style that makes extensive use of his cyberlegs. His style has since evolved with his time on the streets, making him a versatile fighter.
Combat Training - Although inducted into the gritty reality of Night City at a much older age than most solos, Sammy picked up basic firearm proficiency at rigorous rate. Combined with his martial arts training, Sammy leans towards the more aggressive and direct forms of combat, indicated in his preference towards shotguns, pistols and submachineguns.
Escape Artist - Whether it's squeezing through vents, climbing to higher ground, or evading capture through quick thinking, Sammy's agility and street experience make him a master at slipping out of danger.
Streetwise - Like a fish to water, Sammy's intelligence, now unburdened with the meaningless power-grab environment of his corporate background, found itself free to navigate the urban chaos of Night City. Knowing who's who, what's what and how to keep quiet are skills that aren't unique to the gutter kid's experience after all.

Bold. Confrontational. Colourful. Sam's core fashion identity is centered around jackets, often in striking colors like crimson, black, or electric blue, are adorned with intricate embroidery of golden dragons, phoenixes, or lotus flowers. Paired with sleek leather pants and sturdy boots, his look often draws comparisons to Tyger Claws much to his irritation.
When on a job, Sammy conceals his identity with customized motorcycle helmets, stenciled with the same aggressive designs that make his jackets stand out. Contradictory, yet in full alignment with his personality, Sam's identity as the Watchman of Chinatown can never be mistaken for any other Solo on the street.

THE FAMILY
"When the wind blows, it does not choose a direction, but we must..." - Zhuangzi
Sammy Shen grew up in a glass-and-chrome bubble, the kind you don't realize is suffocating until you've choked on the air. His parents—corporate lifers for Kang Tao—poured wealth into his life the way people pour acid down a drain: efficient, impersonal, and meant to clear the way. His days were strangled by schedules, his nights buried under the weight of expectations.
Anthony Shen 罗安泰 ruled with the precision of his job, enforcing rules like they were edicts from on high. Rebecca Shen 岑美玲, with her quiet intellect, chipped away at Sammy's spirit through subtle disapprovals and constant comparisons. They made sure he had everything: private tutors, combat training, the best schools. Everything but freedom.
By the time he hit seventeen, he'd had enough of the gilded cage. He walked out one night, no grand showdown, just the hum of an elevator and the click of a door shutting behind him.
Night City swallowed him whole.
At first, he drifted. Pacifica was a bad choice, but it was the only one he could afford. His first job was moving hot goods for a fixer who paid him in excuses. His second was getting his face kicked in by a ganger he thought he could outtalk. That naïve, corporate-educated swagger nearly got him killed. Would've, too, if not for a stranger who dragged him out of an alley and patched him up. He could've gone back home then, but the thought of his father's lectures burned more than his bruises. Instead, Sammy doubled down.
Chinatown was where he landed next, the streets tighter and smells sharper, but it felt alive in a way Pacifica didn't. Old schoolmates—kids who'd grown soft on their families' corporate yen—helped him get a toe into the edgerunner scene.
He learned fast. You had to, or you didn't last. Sammy toughened up, his corporate education blending with street smarts in a way that made him dangerous. By his mid-twenties, he was carving out a name, taking gigs that required quick thinking and quicker fists.
BLOOMING LOTUS
"Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire" – Confucius
Then came the job that changed everything. A routine transport—standard cargo, nothing special. Except it wasn't. The cargo turned out to be people: monks from the Silent Lotus, a pacifist sect caught in the crosshairs of Maelstrom. Sammy didn't think twice. He turned on his employers, burning every bridge he'd built to save lives that weren't even his problem.
It didn't go clean. Half the monks died before he got to them, and Sammy barely survived the fight. The survivors dragged him back to their temple, patching him up in silence. He stayed with them, learning their ways—how to fight with control, how to see the world through something other than violence. The Silent Lotus taught Sammy peace, or at least they tried. He stayed with them long enough to feel the itch of stillness.
But the city doesn't let you forget what you are. When Tyger Claws and Maelstrom started leaning on the sect, Sammy snapped. With Liam, a senior monk who shared his frustrations, and a handful of younger disciples, Sammy hit back. They dismantled gang operations with ruthless efficiency, leaving blood and broken bodies in their wake.
The Silent Lotus cast them out. Their violence had broken vows too sacred to repair.
That's how the Lotus Guard started—a ragtag mix of Chinatown kids and ex-monks. Sammy led them with a mix of street grit and corporate smarts. Liam 梁志涵, one of the monks who left with him, kept them grounded with martial arts training and quiet wisdom. Together, they turned their little corner of Night City into something close to safe.
Then Evelyn Tao entered the picture. Sweet, kind, and so far removed from Night City's rot, she was everything Sammy didn't know he needed. She was also the adopted daughter of Tao Zhen, leader of the Silent Lotus. Their relationship was a complication Sammy hadn't planned for.
Secrets piled up. Sammy hid the Lotus Guard from Evelyn, hid the growing weight of his choices from himself but there was no hiding his past from her father and the sect. The monks disapproved. Some even tried to scare him off. It didn't work. Eventually, Sammy promised to change—to shift toward nonviolence, to prove himself worthy of Evelyn's trust and her father's blessing.
Sammy made a deal: he'd embrace the sect's doctrine, step by painful step, if it meant keeping Evelyn in his life. He began taking non-lethal contracts, teaching his crew restraint. It was slow, grating, but for the first time, Sammy felt like he was clawing toward something that wasn't just survival.
Now, Sammy walks a tightrope. By day, he's trying to keep Chinatown in one piece. By night, he's chasing something that feels like redemption. And somewhere in between, he's learning that conquering himself might be the hardest fight of all.
